DadGPT Hanja Proficiency Test Level 3 Materials

A self-made 400-character study set designed to build vocabulary, reading comprehension, and the ability to infer the meanings and components of unfamiliar Sino-Korean words. Passing the test is used as a tool for scheduling and a sense of achievement.

Learning Goals

The ultimate goal is to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension through Hanja study.

For each character, the learner should encounter a wide range of Sino-Korean words. The aim is to develop the ability to infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word, or to infer which Hanja character may be used after seeing a Sino-Korean word.

Test preparation and passing the exam are used as tools for managing a study schedule and experiencing achievement.

How to Use the Materials

  • 1. Look at the character’s form and break it down into its components. Ask: “What other character looks similar to this one?” or “What character would this be if the person radical on the left were changed to the show radical?” Try writing it once in a practice notebook.
  • 2. Discuss the character’s meanings. A single character may have more than one meaning. For example, 情 and 意 can both relate to “meaning,” but one carries the sense of feeling or emotion, while the other carries the sense of meaning or thought.
  • 3. Think about Sino-Korean words that contain the character. Since the character has these meanings, what words might use it? Give hints or use example sentences to help the learner recall words containing the character. The purpose is to develop the ability to connect a Sino-Korean word with the character’s meaning and infer its meaning.
  • As you look through the various Sino-Korean words in the materials, discuss what the words mean. Explain unfamiliar words as needed as part of vocabulary study. Also examine the other characters used together in each word. If a word seems writable in Hanja, try writing it in the practice notebook.
  • 4. At the end of the day’s lesson, ask which ten characters were studied and name one word containing each character. Write each character once in the practice notebook. Retrieval practice has a substantial effect on learning.
  • 5. On the following day, take a quiz on Sino-Korean words containing the characters learned the previous day. This reinforces memories as they begin to fade, functioning as spaced repetition.
  • 6. Move on to new characters. The child can complete the quizzes independently, while guidance is provided only for the new material.

Materials

The Level 3 assigned-character list contains a relatively small number of characters: 317. To create a 400-character set, 83 characters assigned to Level 3-II were added.
